Hands On Tutorial – Oracle EBS – SQL to Excel Reporting for Non-developers

Avatar photoCustomer July 4, 2019 at 6:36 am

Our Oracle EBS end-users and business analysts are often frustrated waiting for IT to deliver simple ad-hoc reports, but they are intimidated by the complexity of official reporting tools. How can we empower these non-developers to quickly create their own SQL to Excel reports using Blitz Report?

Blitz Report aims to overcome this intimidation, specifically catering to non-developers who possess basic SQL knowledge. The process is highly simplified: users work within the familiar EBS Forms interface, paste their SQL query, configure minimal settings, and execute.

What is the primary benefit of teaching a business user to drop raw SQL into Blitz Report versus training them on traditional reporting tools like Discoverer or BI Publisher?

The main benefit is agility and simplicity. Traditional tools involve steep learning curves and significant overhead (templates, registration). Blitz Report only requires basic SQL proficiency and automatically delivers clean, perfectly formatted Excel output, enabling the user to bypass the lengthy IT request queue.

Can you outline the core steps involved for a non-developer to create a simple report, perhaps tracking inventory item changes?

A typical workflow involves logging on as a developer (or a user with appropriate privileges) and opening the Blitz Report form. The user pastes their SQL query, assigns version control details, adds parameters if necessary, and nominates a specific user or responsibility for testing the report.

If a user is transitioning from an older tool like Discoverer, how can Blitz Report make that transition easier?

Blitz Report supports the migration of Discoverer reports. Crucially, since the output format (Excel) is superior and the interface is integrated within EBS Forms, it serves as a straightforward Oracle Discoverer replacement for end-users accustomed to running interactive queries.

We need to ensure that when non-developers create reports, the SQL query is properly validated and optimized to prevent performance issues.

While non-developers can input SQL, best practice suggests that underlying complex joins should be validated by IT. However, the system operates with reduced processing overhead , and for performance diagnosis, DBAs can monitor the subsequent query performance using the AWR diagnostic reports available through Blitz Report.

If a user creates a report that should only be accessible to their specific operating unit, how is that access controlled?

    • Support July 16, 2019 at 1:08 pm

Access restriction is handled through standard EBS security mechanisms. The report creator can assign the report to a specific user, module, site, or responsibility. Furthermore, if VPD is active, the data returned will automatically be filtered based on the user’s operating unit context.
