BI Publisher XLSX Output Solution and Row Limit Bypass with Blitz Report

Avatar photoCustomer November 28, 2025 at 4:12 pm

We are consistently facing issues with our standard BI Publisher generated reports in EBS 12.1.3, specifically those utilizing Excel templates. The output format defaults to the older XLS format, which limits us to just 65,536 rows, constantly halting our month-end processes when dealing with high transaction volumes. Oracle documentation confirms this limitation, but we need a pragmatic alternative to reliably generate unlimited XLSX output that overcomes this restrictive BI Publisher row limit. How can we transition away from this constraint quickly?

You are correct that in EBS 12.1.3, BI Publisher frequently generates XLS format output with the 65,536 row limitation, and automatically generating XLSX output is not readily supported. The optimal solution to bypass this BI Publisher row limit is to leverage Blitz Report, as it inherently generates output files in XLSX or CSV format, supporting an unlimited size and row count.

If we migrate reports to Blitz Report, how are large datasets handled when they exceed the modern Excel limit (over a million rows)?

Blitz Report is designed to handle exceptionally large volumes of Oracle EBS Reporting data by implementing an overflow mechanism. Specifically, output files in XLSX format automatically create additional worksheets within the same workbook whenever the row count exceeds 1,048,575 rows.

That’s efficient. Since converting our existing XML/BI Publisher reports would involve development, is there a simple way to port our current data source queries over to Blitz Report?

Yes, Blitz Report features built-in import functionality to rapidly convert and migrate existing BI Publisher reports,. This functionality imports the query from the BI Publisher data definition, allowing developers to immediately test the SQL in Blitz Report and dramatically reduce the typical multi-day development time associated with complex XML template redesigns.

We often need PDF output for regulatory filings. Can Blitz Report generate PDFs, or is it strictly focused on Excel output?

While Blitz Report excels at generating formatted Excel output, it is also capable of producing PDF output files using a custom post-processing feature,. This functionality allows users to assign a script, such as one utilizing LibreOffice, to automatically convert the generated Excel file to a PDF format as part of the concurrent request submission.
