Customizing the Blitz Report DBA Toolkit

Avatar photoCustomer December 24, 2024 at 9:33 pm

We rely on the seeded DBA reports that come with Blitz Report, particularly the Diagnostic Pack reports for AWR. If we need to modify the SQL of a seeded report for our specific environment, how is this process managed to maintain organization and auditability?

Blitz Report simplifies DBA tasks by coming with a set of constantly updated seeded DBA reports. If you need to modify a seeded report, you can easily create your own custom version of the report. By doing so within the Blitz Report interface, you ensure that the customized script is maintained in an organized manner, unlike decentralized text documents.

What organization features help prevent us from having multiple conflicting versions of the same custom DBA query floating around the team?

The centralization within Blitz Report helps tremendously. It is much more convenient to maintain your reports in Blitz Report because it allows you to provide a detailed description, ownership information, and critically, it offers version control. Every alteration to the SQL logic is tracked automatically.

If we define an ‘official’ report, like a standardized query for checking tablespace size based on `dba_tablespace_usage_metrics` , can we restrict who can modify that official version?

Yes, access control is managed by EBS security and Blitz Report’s assignment features. While running the report is controlled by Responsibility access , modifying the underlying SQL definition (the technical version) is restricted to developers or authorized users. The version control system ensures transparency by providing an audit history of all changes.

Is the output format for these DBA reports always Excel, or can we output different diagnostic formats if needed?

    • Support January 2, 2025 at 1:54 am

The primary output for analysis is native, formatted Excel. However, the tool supports generating output to CSV or other file types suitable for external tools like Tableau or Power BI. For DBA purposes, the instant Excel delivery simplifies diagnostics greatly.

What is included in the DBA toolkit component of the larger Blitz Report toolkit?

    • Support January 4, 2025 at 7:48 am

The DBA toolkit specifically focuses on Database Health and Tuning reports, which include the comprehensive suite of AWR and Foundation (FND) reports.
