Discoverer Replacement – Data Export for BI Tools

Avatar photoCustomer June 5, 2020 at 1:05 am

As we transition away from Oracle Discoverer, we need a replacement that seamlessly feeds clean, bulk data into modern BI tools like Tableau or Microsoft Power BI. Can Blitz Report export data in a format suitable for direct ingestion by these systems?

Yes. While Blitz Report is famous for its native Excel output , a user can also report data to CSV or other file types suitable for importing to Tableau or Microsoft Power BI. This capability makes Blitz Report an ideal bridge for moving data out of EBS and into your modern BI ecosystem, replacing Discoverer effectively.

Does generating CSV output via Blitz Report impose the data volume constraints associated with native Oracle Concurrent Requests, or older BI Publisher XLS formats?

No. When exporting data via the Blitz Report engine, there are no volume limitations. This capability is critical for supporting mass data imports required by large-scale BI implementations, ensuring reliability far beyond the constraints of previous tools.

If we use the mass import utility to bring in thousands of old Discoverer worksheets , how complex is it to define the output format (Excel vs. CSV) for each imported report?

    • Support June 10, 2020 at 10:16 pm

The output format is defined as part of the report parameterization or execution profile within the Blitz Report interface, allowing flexibility per execution. Crucially, the process of bringing over the underlying SQL via the automated Discoverer migration features significantly speeds up the time to production readiness.

Since this involves raw data extraction, is security maintained for the data accessed by the BI tools?

    • Support June 11, 2020 at 4:58 pm

The security of the extracted data set is maintained by the underlying EBS security framework and Oracle VPD policies. For the extracted files themselves, the reports can be distributed through enhanced delivery options via the Concurrent Request mechanism , ensuring only authorized users receive the output.

How does this method compare to exporting data from ECC dashboards for BI ingestion?

    • Support June 14, 2020 at 8:38 am

It is superior to ECC’s native export, which often produces limited CSV files. Blitz Report ensures high-volume data sets, whether derived from Discoverer replacement efforts or ECC SQLs, are extracted cleanly and efficiently for BI consumption.
